For the second session with the Madison Explorers Summer campers, UW Medical Physics Outreach organized a lesson and demonstration about radiation and radiation detection! Aeli Olson worked with Jeff Radtke to develop the lesson content and transport the Calibration Lab Cloud Chamber to the camp. The young students enjoyed peering into the cloud chamber to see radiation tracks from background radiation as well as an alpha particle source! They also had the chance to investigate some blue and orange Fiesta ware, surveying cups and saucers for radiation with a Geiger-Muller counter. After the activity, many campers took the opportunity to add notes and pictures into their science notebooks. Thank you to Jeff Radtke and the Calibration Lab for sharing their cloud chamber and thank you to Eric Wallat for assisting with this event!
